Characterisation of the oxide film on the taper interface from retrieved large diameter metal on polymer modular total hip replacements

چکیده
Many metal joint failures have been associated with adverse local tissue reactions due to the response of the body to wear debris and corrosion products, released from the bearing surfaces or the taper interfaces. The oxide film on the CoCrMo plays an important role in the electrochemical behaviour, however, there is a lack of quantitative data on the structure and distribution of oxides following in vivo operation. In the present study, detailed analysis of the surface layer on the taper interfaces is provided. Two retrieved taper interfaces were analysed. Site-specific FIB/TEM cross-sections show evidence of the oxide film and the carbonaceous layer. High resolution TEM results show the oxide film has porous texture and EELS confirmed it is chromium oxide. & 2014 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Assessing the material loss of the modular taper interface in retrieved metal on metal hip replacements
Measuring the amount of material loss in the case of revised hip replacements is considered to be a prerequisite of understanding and assessing the true in vivo performance of the implant. This paper outlines a method developed by the authors for quantifying taper material loss as well as more general taper interface parameters. Previous studies have mostly relied on visual inspection to assess...
متن کاملCorrosion on the acetabular liner taper from retrieved modular metal-on-metal total hip replacements.
Eight retrieved metal-on-metal total hip replacements displayed corrosion damage along the cobalt-chromium alloy liner taper junction with the Ti alloy acetabular shell. Scanning electron microscopy indicated the primary mechanism of corrosion to be grain boundary and associated crevice corrosion, which was likely accelerated through mechanical micromotion and galvanic corrosion resulting from ...
متن کاملCorrosion at the head-neck interface of current designs of modular femoral components: essential questions and answers relating to corrosion in modular head-neck junctions.
There is increasing global awareness of adverse reactions to metal debris and elevated serum metal ion concentrations following the use of second generation metal-on-metal total hip arthroplasties. The high incidence of these complications can be largely attributed to corrosion at the head-neck interface. Severe corrosion of the taper is identified most commonly in association with larger diame...
متن کاملTaper junction failure in large-diameter metal-on-metal bearings
OBJECTIVES An ongoing prospective study to investigate failing metal-on-metal hip prostheses was commenced at our centre in 2008. We report on the results of the analysis of the first consecutive 126 failed mated total hip prostheses from a single manufacturer. METHODS Analysis was carried out using highly accurate coordinate measuring to calculate volumetric and linear rates of the articular...
متن کاملMaterial loss at the taper junction of retrieved large head metal-on-metal total hip replacements.
It has been speculated that material loss, either as corrosion or wear, at the head-stem taper junction is implicated in the high revision rates reported for metal-on-metal total hip replacements. We measured the volume of material loss from the taper and bearing surfaces of retrieved devices, and investigated the associations with blood metal ion levels and the diagnosis of a cystic or solid p...
